Metropolitan Community College breaks ground on Sarpy County Campus
PAPILLION, Nebraska (June 26, 2025) — Metropolitan Community College hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking for the future home of its Sarpy County Campus. Strategically located at the southeast corner of Highway 50 (144th St.) and Highway 370 in Sarpy County, the new location will be the College’s fourth full-service campus, serving as a hub for learning, innovation and community life in Nebraska’s fastest-growing county.
The Sarpy County Campus, which will be the first permanent campus added to the MCC service area since 1980, is situated within a 15-minute drive of seven major high schools and conveniently located less than a mile from Interstate 80. Surrounded by significant business and industry, the 144-acre campus will serve as an anchor for mixed-use development, blending academic spaces and services with retail, dining, housing options and greenspace.
“The Sarpy County Campus is Metropolitan Community College’s commitment to evolve in stride with our communities, continuing the College’s legacy of providing accessible education for generations to come,” said MCC President Randy Schmailzl. “The new campus will be designed to create a destination for learners and community members alike.”
“The Sarpy County Campus is Metropolitan Community College’s commitment to evolve in stride with our communities, continuing the College’s legacy of providing accessible education for generations to come.”
Guided by the MCC mission to create accessible, relevant and student-centered education that supports the region’s workforce and community growth, the MCC 2023 Facilities Long-Range Plan analyzed the College’s offerings and assessed opportunities for strategic growth college-wide, including the Sarpy County Campus. Identified program areas currently under consideration at the Sarpy County Campus include but are not limited to:
- Hospitality and restaurant leadership, expanding the reach of the renowned MCC Institute for the Culinary Arts
- Advanced diesel technology and supply chain logistics
- First responder training for fire science technology, criminal justice and emergency medical services
- Online operations and instructional design services to support distance and remote learning
With the project still in the predevelopment stage and subject to change, MCC will reserve a portion of space for campus facilities and the remainder available for commercial and student housing development. Development will occur in phases, shaped by strategic partnerships, evolving community needs and available funding.
“The Sarpy County Campus will be completed the ‘MCC Way’ — partnering with local and regional employers, K-12 educators, nonprofits, philanthropic leaders and the broader community to shape a campus that prepares students for the possibilities of tomorrow,” Schmailzl said.
Terms and conditions of development are underway and will be announced to the public at a later date. Project bids for the roads and infrastructure package open July 8 and will be reviewed for final MCC Board of Governors approval on July 22.
