Metropolitan Community College offers credit, noncredit and conversational English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to non-English speaking individuals living in the Omaha area. Classes focus on improving individuals' reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills in English, understanding American system of government, individual freedom, and responsibilities of citizenship.

Noncredit ESL

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program provides free, voluntary instruction to help adult learners improve their English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The program supports learners in developing the language skills needed for employment, education, and everyday life in the United States. Students also build an understanding of U.S. civic systems, individual freedoms, and the responsibilities of citizenship to support full participation in their communities.

Enrollment Steps:

  • Attend an Adult Education information session
  • Complete a pre-assessment to determine instructional level
  • Enroll in and complete a three-week introductory course (Transitional Learning Community – TLC)
  • Complete required Nebraska Department of Education documentation
  • Participate in a Career Pathways interview and other onboarding activities
  • Complete required computer and digital literacy components
  • Participate in periodic CASAS assessments (every 40 instructional hours or approximately every three months)
  • Attend classes regularly and maintain consistent participation

Noncredit ESL Program Requirements

To enroll in MCC’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program, students must meet federal eligibility requirements under WIOA Title II. An English learner is defined as an adult with limited ability in reading, writing, speaking, or understanding English, whose native language is not English or who lives in a community where a language other than English is dominant.

ESL for Credit

ESL for Credit offers credit courses that help English learners develop the language and academic skills needed for success in college. Courses are offered at four levels in Listening and Speaking, Writing and Grammar, and Reading and Vocabulary.

To enroll in ESL for Credit, visit Student Services at any MCC Location or call 531-622-5231.

To learn more about ESL for Credit, contact:
Kevin Mortensen, Department Coordinator or call 531-622-2885.

ESL for Credit Placement Testing

Placement into the ESL for Credit program is determined by scores on a set of tests. We recommend that students prepare for these tests using the free ESL ACCUPLACER Study app.

Using the ESL ACCUPLACER Study app:

1. Create an Account: Enter your email address and create a password

2. For Next-Generation Practice Tests: Scroll to “Change Test Version” and select “Next-Generation Practice Tests.” From there, select the type of test you want to practice on and begin (Learn as you Go provides feedback on missed items, Sample Tests do not). You can return at any time to continue or complete a test.

  • If you are taking the English Assessment, review the Reading and Writing practice tests.
  • If you are taking the Math Assessment, you may choose any section of the assessment in which you would like to begin. Start your math review at your level of comfort. Review Arithmetic if you are not fluent in your math skills. Review Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS) section if you are confident in your calculating skills (we suggest reviewing this section as it is the start of college-credit level courses). Lastly, if you already have a higher level of understanding of mathematical calculations and the ability to successfully negotiate upper levels of math, review Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF).

3. For ESL Practice Tests: Go to “Change Test Version” and select “ESL Practice Tests” page. Select the type of test you want to practice on and begin “(Learn as you Go” provides feedback on missed items, “Sample Tests” do not). You can return at any time to continue or complete a test.

  • Review the ESL Listening Skills, ESL Reading Skills, ESL Sentence Meaning, and ESL Language Use practice test sections.
  • If you do very well on the above two reviews, go to “Change Test Version” and select the “Next-Generation Practice Tests” page. Then begin a review of the Reading and Writing practice test sections as well.
