Title IX prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy and related conditions. MCC provides students with equal access to its education programs and activities and responds to pregnancy-related needs consistent with Title IX and other applicable law.

You may request assistance related to pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, recovery, lactation, or related medical needs. Use the Pregnancy and Related Conditions Request Form or contact a Disability Support Services counselor for assistance. Disability Support Services coordinates student requests with oversight and consultation from the Title IX Coordinator as needed.

Students are encouraged to request pregnancy-related assistance as soon as a need arises so MCC can coordinate timely support. If the need arises unexpectedly or you contact MCC after an absence or other academic impact, MCC will review the circumstances and available options individually.

Your Rights

  • You may not be excluded from an MCC education program or activity because of pregnancy or a related condition when you are otherwise eligible to participate.
  • MCC addresses medically necessary pregnancy-related absences and leave consistent with Title IX. When a student has no applicable leave policy or does not qualify under it, pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, and recovery justify leave for the period the student’s physician determines medically necessary.
  • At the conclusion of protected leave, the student must be reinstated to the academic status held when the leave began. MCC will coordinate applicable opportunities to make up missed academic work.
  • MCC treats pregnancy and the conditions identified in Title IX consistently with applicable temporary-disability policies for student medical benefits and services. MCC does not apply rules concerning actual or potential parental, family, or marital status that treat students differently on the basis of sex.
  • MCC prohibits retaliation for requesting or exercising Title IX rights.

Examples of Assistance

MCC reviews individual needs and applicable legal requirements. Depending on the circumstances, College assistance may include:

  • Reasonable adjustments to the educational environment or course-related requirements.
  • Access to a larger desk or seating modification.
  • Breaks for health needs, expressing breast milk, breastfeeding, eating, drinking, or using the restroom, when appropriate.
  • Schedule or attendance-related modifications when required.
  • A medically necessary leave of absence or excused absence consistent with Title IX.
  • Other individualized assistance required by law or available under College policy. MCC’s lactation services and other support offerings may extend beyond specific requirements stated in the Title IX regulation.

Documentation

MCC will not automatically require medical documentation for every pregnancy-related request. Documentation will be requested only when permitted by applicable law and reasonably necessary to determine or support the requested modification. Any documentation requirement will be applied consistently with Title IX and MCC's treatment of comparable temporary medical conditions.

Questions and Concerns About Assistance

Contact Disability Support Services if you need help submitting a request or if an approved arrangement is not being implemented. Contact the Title IX Coordinator if you believe you experienced pregnancy-related discrimination or retaliation, or if you have concerns about a denied request. The Coordinator can explain the applicable review or complaint process.

MCC Lactation Support Program
MCC provides lactation support to help students continue participating in their education while expressing milk for a nursing baby.

When feasible, students may choose to express milk between classes or outside instruction time. If a health need requires time during class, request assistance so MCC can coordinate an individualized arrangement.

Use the Pregnancy and Related Conditions Request Form or contact Disability Support Services to coordinate lactation-related academic assistance. Contact the Title IX Coordinator if you need help accessing a lactation space.

Instructors and students work with the coordinating office to arrange applicable opportunities to make up missed work, participation, or instruction. If a room is unavailable or unsuitable, or an approved arrangement is not working, contact the Title IX Coordinator.
